Undyed carded batts for hand spinners and felt makers

We established North West Wool in 2011 to partner with sheep rearers in North Lancashire and South Cumbria who produce fleeces which hand woolcrafters find exciting. Our speciality product is carded batts, perfect for woollen spinning and laying out felt for creative work.

Because we only select the very best fleeces and buy from small producers, we often have limited supplies of any wool breed. Our range changes almost constantly as supplies are acquired and sold. Each producer has their own dedicated web page for as long as those stocks last. The pages show pictures of the sheep on the farm and give some information about the rearers. This way you know exactly where your wool is coming from and how it is reared.

We are trialling all our wool types personally and we publish comments about the spinning and felt making qualities of each. You can read about our sampling methods on the sampling page. We also create one-off blends of pairs of wool types in the batt to combine their best qualities and stimulate new ideas for beautiful work. See the specials page.

We believe in paying a fair price to our local rearers for their high quality fleece and we hope that we contribute in a small way to sustaining expert wool rearing in the long term. Naturally all the processing is done in the north of England to keep our carbon footprint to an absolute minimum.

Our small-batch scouring and carding supplier has been processing wool for many years and since they went independent a few years ago they have been specialising in processing for hand crafters. The harsh chemical treatments used by the larger industrial processors for ridding the wool of the last traces of vegetable matter are avoided and the end result is a more natural and environmentally sound material.

We hope you like our products.
